How to protect ourselves from thunderbolts

Air is not a very good conductor of electricity and that is why lightning follows the shortest possible route, choosing the highest point carrying the opposing charge. This high point could easily be a lone tree or a solitary walker on a plain. That is why you have to take care when caught outdoors in an electrical storm:

* Stay away from trees or poles standing alone.
* Water is a good conductor of electricity. Stay away from puddles or lakes.
* Get inside a car, if one is nearby. The electrical discharge will flow over the metal body of the car and run to the ground via the wet tyres without harming you.
* If you are open ground and there are no shelters around, kneel, put your head between your knees and cover your ears with your hands.
